Where Saint James comes from
Saint James says it began in 1889 with the “Filatures de Saint James”, a spinning mill set up in the Normandy town of Saint-James under its former mayor, Léon Legallais. The company says its offices and workshops have stayed in the region ever since, and that it was one of the first French clothing makers to export, with a presence in Japan as early as 1980. It says ownership passed to its employees and senior executives in 1990. In 2012 the French government awarded it the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) label, which Saint James says recognises its mending experts, the raccoutreuses.
What Saint James stands for
The brand describes its identity as artisanal, slow-fashion knitting know-how built with a close “family” of employees, and it ties itself to Normandy’s nautical tradition. Its craftsmanship page says its knitting engineers oversee one of Europe’s largest knitting workshops, with 75 looms, and that production is partly mechanised, with master knitters starting, feeding and adjusting the machines. Several product pages say “Made in Saint-James, Normandy, France”, but others, such as the Glasgow Cardigan and Kabig Coat, state no place of manufacture. The pages we read give no sustainability certifications. We haven’t tested any of the products.
