A Diptyque candle is one of the easiest gifts to get right and one of the easiest to get wrong, because the range runs to more than fifty scents and several sizes. The trick is to match the scent to the person, pick a size that suits the room, and know what a first-time owner needs to do to enjoy it.

This guide does that. We read the product pages, size and burn-time details, care instructions and gifting rules on Diptyque’s US store on 4 November 2026. The scent descriptions are Diptyque’s own words, the groupings by recipient are ours, and we haven’t tested any of the candles. The main guide stays useful all year, and a short dated section near the end covers holiday sets and availability.

The short answer: For most people, give a classic candle (6.7 oz, $90) in Baies, Roses, Figuier or Tubéreuse, the four scents Diptyque marks as best-sellers. Choose Feu de Bois or Ambre for someone who likes warm, cosy scents, and Citronnelle or Verveine for someone who likes things fresh. The classic size is also the best value per burning hour. Gift it unopened, because online returns are only accepted for unopened items.

Last updated: 4 November 2026. Prices, stock and holiday items are from the Diptyque US store on that day and change often. This is general guidance, not a test of any candle.

Which scent for which person

Diptyque describes every candle in a line or two. Here are nine that cover most recipients, grouped by who is likely to enjoy them. The descriptions are Diptyque’s, the “gift for” column is our reading of them, and every price is for the classic 6.7 oz size unless noted.

Gift for Candle How Diptyque describes it Price
Someone who likes fresh, fruity scentsBaies (Berries)Fresh-picked blackcurrants, some still with leaves and stems, with lively accents of rose$90
A flower loverRosesA bouquet of roses, cut from a dewy bush in high May, some blooms still opening$90
A green, sunny-scent personFiguier (Fig Tree)Not only the fruit, but an endless orchard of vibrant fig trees stretching along the shoreline$90
Someone who likes bold floralsTubéreuse (Tuberose)A heady floral from the fields of Southern India$90
A cosy-home winter personFeu de Bois (Wood Fire)Winter arrives and the fire roars in the hearth, with the soft crackle of burning wood$90
Someone who likes warm, rich scentsAmbre (Amber)Amber spheres discovered in an ancient treasure box, telling a tale of timeless secrets$90
A sweet-and-spicy fanVanille (Vanilla)A single, profoundly fragrant vanilla pod that waits months to mature, then unleashes the full potency of the spice$90
Someone who likes things fresh and cleanCitronnelle (Lemongrass) or Verveine (Lemon Verbena)Lemongrass stalks releasing invigorating, fresh, aromatic notes at sunset; verbena leaves as though crumpled in the hand$90
Someone who cares about the brand's story34 boulevard Saint GermainA signature scent that recalls the effervescence of the 1960s in the very first Diptyque boutique$130 (medium; we did not see a classic size)

Our view: if you don’t know the person’s taste, stay with the four best-sellers below. They are well known, which makes them easy to give, and the florals and fruit are less divisive than smoky or resinous scents such as Feu de Bois or Oud. If you do know their taste, match it: someone who loves bonfires and leather chairs will like Feu de Bois more than a rose.

The four best-sellers

Diptyque marks Baies, Roses, Figuier and Tubéreuse as best-sellers on its US store. Here is what each is like, in the brand’s words, and who we would give it to.

  • Baies (Berries): blackcurrants with leaves and stems, with lively accents of rose. Diptyque calls it “the herbarium of fruits.” It is a good first Diptyque for someone who likes fruit and flowers together. It is sold in every size, from a $48 small candle up to a $1,100 giant one.
  • Roses: a bouquet of roses cut from a dewy bush in May. Diptyque calls it an ode to springtime’s most iconic flower. It suits anyone who likes classic florals, and it works as an easy gift for a host.
  • Figuier (Fig Tree): an “endless orchard” of fig trees along the shoreline, rather than only the fruit. It suits people who like green, sunny and slightly woody scents. We feature the candle on our Diptyque brand page too.
  • Tubéreuse (Tuberose): an “uncommon scented experience” that examines every facet of tuberose. Diptyque describes it as heady, so it is the one to choose for someone who likes a strong floral, not someone who prefers light scents.

Which size to buy

Diptyque sells the same scents in a ladder of sizes. The figures below are for Baies, which is sold in all of them. Diptyque’s burn times are “around” figures, and we checked that seven different classic scents (Baies, Roses, Figuier, Feu de Bois, Ambre, Tubéreuse and Vanille) all list the same 190 g and about 60 hours.

Size Weight Burn time (Diptyque) Price Per burning hour Rooms (Diptyque)
Small, 2.5 oz70 gAbout 20 hours$48$2.40Small rooms
Classic, 6.7 oz190 gAbout 60 hours$90$1.50Small and medium-sized rooms
Medium, 10.6 oz300 gAbout 75 hours$130$1.73Medium-sized and large rooms
Large, 21.2 oz600 gAbout 90 hours$250$2.78Medium-sized and large rooms
Very large, 51.3 oz1.5 kgAbout 120 hours$440$3.67Large rooms and outdoor spaces
Giant, 5 kg5 kgAbout 300 hours$1,100$3.67Not stated on the page we read

What the table shows: the classic is the cheapest way to buy burning time, at about $1.50 an hour. The small candle is the most expensive per hour but also the cheapest to give, at $48. The two biggest sizes cost about $3.67 an hour, so you are paying for presence and scale as well as burning time. Diptyque notes the large Baies sits in a porcelain vessel.

Our view: for most gifts, buy the classic. It’s priced as a proper gift, it lasts around 60 hours, and Diptyque lists it for small and medium-sized rooms, which covers most living rooms and bedrooms. Choose the small at $48 when the budget is tight or you want to introduce someone to a scent. Choose the medium or large for someone with a bigger room or who will use it as a decorative object. Skip the very large and giant sizes unless you know the person wants a statement piece.

Candle, diffuser, room spray or perfume

The same scents often come in other formats. Here is how the Baies and Roses versions compare, with the perfume prices from our Diptyque brand page.

Format US price How it works Our view: best for
Classic candle$90 (refill $70)Around 60 hours, lit for up to 4 hours at a timeThe safe, all-round gift and a way to set an evening
Room spray$88Sprayed into the air, no flameA quick refresh, or someone who can't burn candles
Hourglass diffuser$235 (refill $85)Perfumes small spaces for several months, then can be refilled twice with the same fragrance (Diptyque)A steady background scent with no flame
Perfume$260 (75 ml eau de parfum); eau de toilette from about $145 on 2 NovemberWorn on skinSomeone whose perfume you already know

Our view: a candle is the safer gift than a perfume. A scent worn on skin is personal and can smell different on different people, while a candle scents a room, so it is easier to enjoy even if the choice isn’t perfect. Choose a diffuser or room spray for someone who can’t or won’t burn candles, such as a small office or a home with pets or children. Choose a perfume only if you know what the person already wears. Diptyque includes a trial sample with each fragrance order, which helps if you are buying one for yourself.

What first-time owners should know

A Diptyque candle needs a few habits to burn well. These are the brand’s own instructions, and they are worth passing on with the gift.

  • Light it with a match, and put it on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Protect wood or marble with a stand or tray, and keep it away from drafts and flammable materials.
  • The first burn matters. Let it burn until a uniform pool of wax has formed across the top, about 4 hours depending on the scent. Diptyque says this prevents tunneling and lets the wick absorb the wax properly. The wick may smoke slightly when first lit.
  • After that, burn it for no more than 4 hours at a time, keep at least 10 cm (4 inches) between two candles, and never leave one burning unattended.
  • After each use, snuff the flame with a snuffer, re-center the wick once it is out, and trim it to 3 to 5 mm before relighting. A wick trimmer helps, and Diptyque sells a Gold Wick Trimmer for $68 that makes a nice add-on gift.
  • Know when to stop. Stop using the candle when only 5 mm of wax is left or the metal wick base shows.
  • Give it time. Diptyque says the fragrance is optimal after about 20 minutes.
  • Store it in a dry, temperate place between 15 and 25 °C (59 to 77 °F), away from direct sunlight, which can discolor the wax. Air out the room after burning.

Refilling: Diptyque says its classic candle glass is now refillable. A refill costs $70 and is listed at around 50 hours of burning, so it works out at about $1.40 an hour. The brand’s instructions soften the old wax in a 60 °C (140 °F) water bath and remove it with a round-tipped knife. Refills were available for only some scents on the day we looked, and several were sold out.

Gift logistics: wrapping, delivery and returns

  • Wrapping: gift orders arrive in a Diptyque gift box with an optional gift message. If an order has several items, they are not wrapped individually, so order each gift separately if you want that. The 1.5 kg and 5 kg candles, the advent calendar and the holiday gift sets can’t be gift boxed, but they come in their own packaging.
  • Delivery: UPS Ground is free on every order and takes 5 to 7 business days, including 1 to 2 days of processing. UPS 3-day Select costs $45 and UPS Next Day Air $90. Engraving can add 1 to 3 business days.
  • Warehouse closures: Diptyque’s warehouse is closed on weekends and public holidays, including Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve. Orders placed then ship the next business day.
  • Returns: the US store accepts returns of unopened items within 30 days, and online orders can’t be returned in a Diptyque store. That matters for gifts. If the scent doesn’t suit the recipient, they can only return it unopened, so choose a scent you are confident about.
  • Samples: product pages say every order comes with 2 free samples of your choice, which is a small bonus to tuck in or keep.

Is a Diptyque candle worth the price?

At $90 for 190 g and around 60 hours, a classic candle costs about $1.50 an hour. Diptyque says all its candles are made in France, and that master candle makers at two factories, near Paris and in Provence, blend up to eight types of wax for each scent and size (see our Diptyque brand page). The classic can be refilled for $70, or about $1.40 an hour. Those are the brand’s own claims and numbers, and we haven’t tested the candles or compared them with other brands.

Our view: it is a luxury price, and the question is whether the scent and the object matter to the person. As a gift for someone who will light it often and use the refill, it works out well. For someone who will keep it unlit as decoration, the size and the vessel matter more than burn time. Either way, a well-chosen classic is a safer spend than a large candle.

Holiday section: dated 4 November 2026

This part of the guide changes with the season, so check the store before you buy. On 4 November 2026 we saw:

  • Holiday Edition set of 5 miniature candles, $120. A limited-edition pre-composed set of 1.2 oz minis in Baies, Roses, 34 boulevard Saint Germain, Ambre and Cannelle. That is $24 a candle, and it is a good way to let someone try five scents.
  • Surprise Set with 3 miniature candles, Holiday Edition, $72. Three of the Maison’s scents in a box with a joyful design, also $24 a candle. The scents are not named on the page.
  • Sapin (Pine Tree), the holiday scent, in several formats including a $55 small candle and a $160 scented advent taper candle.
  • Citrouille (Pumpkin) classic candle, $90. A limited edition with golden gourds and crackling spices.
  • A holiday sleeve: Diptyque says that during the holidays each scented classic candle is presented in a limited-edition illustrated sleeve.
  • The Advent Calendar (25 scented treasures), $525, was sold out. It is one of the items that can’t be gift boxed.

Holiday sets can’t be gift boxed, and the warehouse closes on Thanksgiving, the day after, and Christmas Eve and Day, so allow for the 5 to 7 business days that UPS Ground takes. Sizes and scents sell out, and limited editions can disappear before the season ends.

A final thought

The best candle gift is the one that matches the person, comes in a size they’ll use, and arrives with a note about how to burn it. Start with a classic in one of the best-sellers, add a wick trimmer if you want a little extra, and tell them to give the first burn four hours.
