Where Diptyque comes from
Diptyque opened in 1961 at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris, started by three friends: painter Desmond Knox-Leet, interior architect Christiane Montadre-Gautrot and Yves Coueslant. Its own story describes the first shop as part artist’s studio, part cabinet of curiosities, filled with antiques and objects they found on their travels. In 1963 the trio turned the scented candle into a decorative object, starting with Aubépine (Hawthorn), Cannelle (Cinnamon) and Thé (Tea). Five years later came its first eau de toilette, L’Eau, based on a 16th-century recipe. The oval label and playful lettering on every product come from the founders’ love of graphic art. Today Diptyque sells candles, perfume, body care, home fragrance and decor, and runs its own Maison boutiques in Paris and London.
What Diptyque stands for
Diptyque says all of its candles and all of its fragrances are made in France. For candles, it says master waxmakers at two manufacturers, one near Paris and one in Provence, create a different wax blend for each scent and size, using up to eight types of wax. Each candle takes around ten steps to produce, and some are done by hand, such as centering the wick and cutting it to exactly five millimeters. Its glass comes from workshops across France and Europe, and its large sculptural candles draw on the Virebent ceramic workshop. On sustainability, it says its formulas exceed European regulatory standards and that products can be refilled, recycled, repaired and reused. Classic candles are now refillable, and selected boutiques refill its eau de toilette and eau de parfum bottles at a 30% discount on a new bottle. We haven’t tested any of the products.

Ordering from the US
Diptyque runs a US store with prices in US dollars, and its terms say the site is owned and controlled by Diptyque Distribution LLC. UPS Ground is free on all orders and takes 5 to 7 business days, including 1 to 2 business days of processing. UPS 3-day Select costs $45 and UPS Next Day Air $90.
