Where Castañer comes from

Castañer (often typed Castaner without the tilde) opened its first workshop in Banyoles, Catalonia, in 1927. Luís Castañer and his cousin Tomás Serra drove the company’s first industrialization, and Serra designed the stitching machines that, the brand says, are still used in the workshop today. In the 1970s Castañer met Yves Saint Laurent and together they created the first espadrille with a wedge, turning a shoe of popular origin into a fashion staple. Its icons are the wedge styles Carina, Carol, Chiara and Chiarita, and it also makes flat espadrilles, sandals, boots and bags.

What Castañer stands for

Castañer describes its values as tradition, craftsmanship and natural materials. Its atelier page says the making of an espadrille has hardly changed in 90 years: jute braided into soles on machines invented in the Castañer atelier, soles stitched on a machine made by Tomás Serra, vulcanized rubber, and uppers that are often still sewn by hand. It says it sources its jute from India and Bangladesh and uses certified organic cotton and jute, and describes each pair as handmade in Spain. Its sustainability claims are broad, with no certification figures on the pages we read, and the spec sheets list plain 100% cotton on some models and organic cotton on others, so check each product. We haven’t tested any of the products.

What you’ll pay

Castañer is premium. These are regular prices on its US store on November 2, 2026. Markdowns were widespread: roughly half of the in-stock range (230 of 442 items) carried a sale price, so these are the full prices before discounts.

  • Wedge espadrilles: $135 to $590 (typically about $200)
  • Flat espadrilles: $165 to $420 (about $250)
